There are many things that can cause acne. Many of which you have probably heard of and some you have not. Those causes which are more trivial than others could be one of many myths that people say cause acne. The most common causes of acne is from internal (e.g. bacterial and hormones) and external (dry skin and bad/cheap skin care products).

Internal

Bacteria
Many are wondering what kind of bacteria causes acne, and there are different kinds of bacteria that can cause acne and one of them is “propionibacterium acnes”. The name propionibacterium comes from it’s ability to generate propionic acid which is considered an intermediate between acetic acids fatty acids. The bacteria itself lives on fatty acids and it is therefore common in fat skin. People with acne caused from bacteria often have a red inflammational condition in their skin.

Sebum
On your skin you have millions of hair follicles. These cavities in the skin all consists of sebaceous glands which contains an oily matter called sebum. The sebum is used to lubricate the skin and prevent it from drying out. Sometimes when the sebum is trying to lubricate the skin there is something which is clogs the hair follicles and they become obstructed. This can cause another type of acne to grow and will largely consist of sebum and dead skin. It can also cause and inflammational condition.

Hormones
You could say that hormonal acne and acne caused from obstructed hair follicles (sebum) is similair. Because the production of oily matter in our skin (sebum) is controlled with the help of hormones. This is why children don’t get acne. During puberty, pregnancy and menopause the hormone levels in our body could have an abnormal production and could therefore make the hair follicles to produce excessive amounts of sebum in their glands and cause more acne. The hormones which is active during puberty, pregnancy and menopause is called androgenes and is a male hormone, but present in both males and females.

• On a sidenote I can tell you that some people believe that acne is something that can be a genetic thing. And can be passed on to future generation since you skin’s thickness and hormone responses is something that actually can be passed on, and is without a doubt something you can inherrit from let’s say your mom or dad.

External

Bad skin care products
It is really important that you test skin care products before deciding to stick with them. All products doesn’t fit all people and you need to find out which one fits your skin type the best. Failing in getting a skin care product that is good for your skin can have an opposite effect and clog your skin pores and give you acne, and you don’t want that right?

Over exposure from sun
Over exposure from the sun is bad for many reasons. If you already have acne it could get worse, to much sun can clog your skin pores when your skin dehydrates in the warm sun and cause a more severe acne. Some acne products sugest that you don’t expose you treated skin at all since it can cause pigment change. And except acne it is also said that too much exposure from sunrays can cause cancer cells to grow!

Squeezing
Squeezing and picking on your acne is something you really should avoid at all costs. But it is nonetheless commong among all who suffer from acne. You don’t want to have a face covered in pimples and you simply want to get rid of them, right? The problem is not the squeezing part, it’s the hygien. It’s almost impossible to get rid of all bacteria when washing your hands (especially without soap) and filthy hands is doomed to cause acne when squeezing. Something that’s worse than acne is infected acne. Let the skin heal itself!

Washing your face to often
Washing you face to often can result in over stimulation of the oil glands in your skin or removing them, making your skin dehydrated. Keep you face washing up to 2-3 times a day.
